Texas Rangers pitcher Carter Baumler received news of his Opening Day roster selection from manager Skip Schumaker during a spring training exhibition game against the Kansas City Royals at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Arizona.
Baumler entered in relief of MacKenzie Gore in the fifth inning. He did not allow a run and recorded one strikeout before Schumaker visited the mound, despite Baumler not yet satisfying the three-batter minimum requirement for removal under major league rules.[1]
Schumaker gathered the infielders and informed Baumler he had secured a spot on the major league roster to start the 2026 season. Baumler later described the moment: "I turned around, I saw him, I was just caught off guard and didn’t know what was going to happen. And then he told me that, and it was just a really cool moment."[1]
The Pittsburgh Pirates had selected Baumler in the Rule 5 Draft prior to the 2026 season. The Rangers acquired him from the Pirates in a trade during the offseason.[1][2]
Originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Baumler has yet to make his major league debut. Surprise Stadium serves as the spring training facility for both the Rangers and Royals in the Cactus League.[3]
As a Rule 5 Draft pick retained on the Opening Day roster, the Rangers must keep Baumler on their active 26-man roster for the entire 2026 regular season or return him to the Pirates.[4]
