Cleveland Guardians relievers Clase and Ortiz moved to unpaid leave amid federal gambling probe

Major League Baseball announced on Friday that Cleveland Guardians relief pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz will transition to unpaid leave as they await trial for allegedly rigging pitches in a federal gambling investigation.

The relievers had been on paid non-disciplinary leave since the investigation began over the summer. The shift to unpaid leave follows an agreement between MLB and the players' association.

MLB stated: "This agreement is not an admission of any wrongdoing by Clase or Ortiz. MLB has been closely monitoring the matter since alerting federal law enforcement at the outset of its investigation and will have no further comment until its investigation has been completed."

Clase, a 27-year-old right-handed closer from the Dominican Republic, signed a five-year, $20 million contract extension with the Guardians on April 15, 2022.[1] He led the American League in saves in 2021 (24), 2022 (42) and 2023 (46).[2]

In 2023, Clase posted a 0.59 ERA over 66 2/3 innings pitched and was named the AL Reliever of the Year.[1][2] He finished the 2024 season with a 0.61 ERA, 44 saves and 89 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings.[1]

Luis Ortiz, a 29-year-old right-handed reliever born in Cuba, made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021.[3] He recorded a 3.23 ERA in 45 appearances during the 2024 season.[3]

According to reports, Clase and Ortiz were indicted on November 9, 2025, facing charges including wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to influence sporting contests.[4] Clase has pleaded not guilty and was released on bond.
