Former San Jose State volleyball co-captain Brooke Slusser's TikTok account restored after temporary ban

Brooke Slusser, a former opposite hitter and co-captain for the San Jose State University women's volleyball team from 2021 to 2023,[4] had her TikTok account temporarily banned after posting videos discussing her experiences sharing a team and apartment with transgender teammate Blaire Fleming. According to screenshots provided by Slusser to Fox News Digital, the account was marked as "permanently banned" for violating community guidelines, but it was restored on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, following publication of the report.[3]

The notifications stated: "We ask that all users follow our Community Guidelines to help us maintain a safe, respectful TikTok community." Slusser's initial appeal was unsuccessful, Fox News Digital reported.[3]

Slusser's posts came amid ongoing controversy over the SJSU women's volleyball program. On January 30, 2024, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights announced findings that SJSU violated Title IX by failing to adequately respond to sex discrimination complaints from female students about a male student-athlete ("Player 1") joining the women's team during the 2020-2023 seasons.[1]

The investigation determined SJSU subjected at least one female student-athlete to a hostile environment after she raised concerns about Player 1, including allegations that Player 1 conspired with a player from an opposing team to injure her during a match. SJSU did not investigate the conspiracy allegation and later filed a Title IX complaint against the student-athlete for misgendering Player 1 online.[1][2]

On February 16, 2024, SJSU President Cynthia Teniente-Matson announced that the university and the California State University system had filed a lawsuit against the Department of Education to challenge the OCR findings. "Because we believe OCR’s findings aren’t grounded in the facts or the law, SJSU and the CSU filed a lawsuit today against the federal government," Teniente-Matson said in a statement.[2]

Fleming, listed as an opposite hitter on the 2024 SJSU roster,[5] joined the team ahead of the 2022 season. Slusser has described sharing a bed with Fleming unknowingly and alleged that head coach Todd Kress encouraged the arrangement, according to her interview with Fox News Digital.[3]

Slusser, now signed with activist sportswear brand XX-XY Athletics, has faced online criticism on TikTok and X following her comments, while receiving support from advocates including Riley Gaines and Martina Navratilova.[3] The lawsuit remains pending.
