New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn expressed strong support for quarterback Geno Smith, suggesting he is equipped to help end the team's lengthy playoff absence during his return to the franchise that originally drafted him.
The Jets have not qualified for the postseason since the 2010 season, marking the longest active playoff drought in the NFL.[1][2]
Smith was selected by the Jets in the second round, 39th overall, of the 2013 NFL Draft out of West Virginia.[3]
During his initial tenure with New York from 2013 to 2016, Smith posted mixed results, including a rookie season with 2,974 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and a league-high 21 interceptions in 16 games.[3] In 2014, he balanced his touchdown-interception ratio at 13 each,[3] but missed time in 2015 after suffering a broken jaw in a locker room altercation with teammate IK Enemkpali.[3]
After departing the Jets, Smith joined the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the 2019 season, where he earned back-to-back Pro Bowl nods in 2022 and 2023.[3]
The Jets posted a 3-6 record through nine games in the 2024 season.[4] Glenn highlighted Smith's arm strength, improved decision-making and ability to learn from past mistakes as key attributes for offensive success.
