India Turns to Russian LNG Imports Amid West Asia Conflict and US Sanctions

The Narendra Modi government has approved imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia to ease India's LPG shortage, triggered by Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. A Russian tanker, the Kun Peng, carries this cargo from the sanctioned Portovaya plant on the Baltic Sea and heads to the Dahej terminal on India's west coast. Blockade Disrupts Critical Energy Flows

Iran's unofficial closure of the Strait of Hormuz since late February has slashed maritime traffic there by 95 percent, following US-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic. This waterway carries one-fifth of global energy supplies, including 2.5 to 2.7 million barrels per day of India's crude oil imports—nearly half its total. Supplies from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait now face severe delays, hitting energy-deficient India hard and fueling domestic LPG shortages.

Russian Cargo Defies US Sanctions Pressure

The Kun Peng shipment represents Russia's first LNG delivery to India since US President Donald Trump claimed last year that Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to halt Russian energy purchases. India has never confirmed such an assurance, insisting its import choices follow market dynamics and consumer demands. Russian LNG from Portovaya falls under US sanctions, yet New Delhi prioritizes affordable supply amid the crisis.
